  • Chinese New Year & Spring Festival!

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.

The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often one month later than the Gregorian calendar. It originated in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC-c. 1100 BC) from the people's sacrifice to gods and ancestors at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.

Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Many customs accompany the Spring Festival. Some are still followed today, but others have weakened.

On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make laba porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with glutinous rice, millet, seeds of Job's tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan and gingko.

The 23rd day of the 12th lunar month is called Preliminary Eve. At this time, people offer sacrifice to the kitchen god. Now however, most families make delicious food to enjoy themselves.

After the Preliminary Eve, people begin preparing for the coming New Year. This is called "Seeing the New Year in".

Store owners are busy then as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include edible oil, rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and kinds of nuts. What's more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing.

Before the New Year comes, the people completely clean the indoors and outdoors of their homes as well as their clothes, bedclothes and all their utensils.

Then people begin decorating their clean rooms featuring an atmosphere of rejoicing and festivity. All the door panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets, highlighting Chinese calligraphy with black characters on red paper. The content varies from house owners' wishes for a bright future to good luck for the New Year. Also, pictures of the god of doors and wealth will be posted on front doors to ward off evil spirits and welcome peace and abundance.

The Chinese character "fu" (meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for in Chinese the "reversed fu" is homophonic with "fu comes", both being pronounced as "fudaole." What's more, two big red lanterns can be raised on both sides of the front door. Red paper-cuttings can be seen on window glass and brightly colored New Year paintings with auspicious meanings may be put on the wall.

People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat dinner together. The meal is more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd cannot be excluded, for in Chinese, their pronunciations, respectively "ji", "yu" and "doufu," mean auspiciousness, abundance and richness. After the dinner, the whole family will sit together, chatting and watching TV. In recent years, the Spring Festival party broadcast on China Central Television Station (CCTV) is essential entertainment for the Chinese both at home and abroad. According to custom, each family will stay up to see the New Year in.

Waking up on New Year, everybody dresses up. First they extend greetings to their parents. Then each child will get money as a New Year gift, wrapped up in red paper. People in northern China will eat jiaozi, or dumplings, for breakfast, as they think "jiaozi" in sound means "bidding farewell to the old and ushering in the new". Also, the shape of the dumpling is like gold ingot from ancient China. So people eat them and wish for money and treasure.

Southern Chinese eat niangao (New Year cake made of glutinous rice flour) on this occasion, because as a homophone, niangao means "higher and higher, one year after another." The first five days after the Spring Festival are a good time for relatives, friends, and classmates as well as colleagues to exchange greetings, gifts and chat leisurely.

Burning fireworks was once the most typical custom on the Spring Festival. People thought the spluttering sound could help drive away evil spirits. However, such an activity was completely or partially forbidden in big cities once the government took security, noise and pollution factors into consideration. As a replacement, some buy tapes with firecracker sounds to listen to, some break little balloons to get the sound too, while others buy firecracker handicrafts to hang in the living room.

The lively atmosphere not only fills every household, but permeates to streets and lanes. A series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern dancing, lantern festivals and temple fairs will be held for days. The Spring Festival then comes to an end when the Lantern Festival is finished.

China has 56 ethnic groups. Minorities celebrate their Spring Festival almost the same day as the Han people, and they have different customs.

  • New Term As Usual but Different Feeling!

This Monday, the new term of my college started. Yes, in the past 15 years, from elementary school to college today, I have be accustomed to the school life started at approximately the same time of the year. Every new term, there were some new feeling, some moan for my gone young and happy days, sth just like that, and then I had to be absorbed in my study and lessons. Nevertheless, this year must be different! It is the last year of my college life.

Poeple at the same age as mine are always confused about the future! Too many questions, what I can do for a earning, should I go on to the further education to get a higher degree, who will be my wife, does the girl I like likes me too……… Woo, so many questions and you find no relative answers! Maybe I am just a fully fool.

Yesterday afternoon, I went back to the college to have my lesson Academic Writing--- the only course I have this term. I met my classmates, they didn't change too much during the long vacation of more than 2 months. Most of them are busy preparing the entry exam for postgraduate. I have also signed up for that exam, but I don't like to do that to be honest. I want to get a job to earn money, I want to feed myself early. Maybe a postgraduate degree would help me to be paid better, that is just why so many students work hard for, I prefer starting my career earlier, there must be pressure, crackdown, even failure, yes I know there should be, but I have maken the choice, so I must answer for that.

Last night, I gave a ring to the girl I like, very glad to hear her voice and to my surprise, she selected the same goal university of the postgraduate with me! Coincidence! Too many coincidences between us! But I don't know whether we could be together in future, her family is rich but mine is poor, in small cities of China as my city, wealth is a important concerned factor to a marriage! I am not sure whether I could have enough money to marry her. The inflation is at a high level now!

Woo, that is life! I know! I will never give up! I am sure!:)

  • Spectacular Shootings! China 3-2 Denmark!

Last night, in Wuhan China, our 'Steel Roses' met their first rival in the 2007 Women's World Cup--Denmark, who has a higher place in FIFA than China, after a fierce and dramatic battle, our girls beat Dane at depending on three accurate powerful long shots!

Our captain Jie Li scored by a wonderful free kick in the first half, in the second half, Yan Bi shot the goal by a strong long shot, China led the match by 2 goals, but Dane didn't give up, 2 heads, they equalized! That made me very disappointed, because only 3 or 4 minutes left, China might have little chance to won! Nevertheless, Dane had their joy for seconds, the substitute Xiao Li Song shot the winning goal, an accurate long shot again! I jumped up, and the whole stadium explosive. Great! Our girls makes it! That is football, everything is possible, spectacle always occurs at the last moment!

I hope we will go on wining untill the champ!!! Come On!!!

  • 2007 FiFA Women's World Cup Kicked Off!

Last evening, the 2007 FiFa Women's World Cup kicked off in Shanghai, China! In the opening match, Germany won Argentina 11:0, which is the biggest score in the history of Women's World Cup. I think the gap between the 2 teams should not be that wide. The goalkeeper of Argentina experienced a bad dream last night, she kicked the ball to her own target twice! Poor girl! Nevertheless, failure may be useful for the young team.

Tomorrow, Our "steel roses" will fight with Denmark, the first match of our girls, WE WILL WIN!!! After the refulgence memory of last generation of China Women football, China has been down for a long time, but now, Domanski has brought new things to China! We are strong and confident!!!:)

The theme of last night's opening ceremony is "girl and football", which I think it is a little gray, the sports administration pay little attention and due money to the development of women football in China, most women football teams have to face the problem of fund shortage. Few companies would like to sponsor women football team. Our pretty football girls have ever brought great joy that our men team never give to us, but in this profit-based society, people just attch more importance to the current money, what a short sight behaviour!:'(

  • I Wanna Have a Sleep!

It is already Autumn now in my area, weather is not intense hot, but it is the time people feel tired easily, especially when noon. I really wanna a sleep, but I should go on my work. That is the reality, I have to work to gain sth, in fact I will gain very a little, I have no choice. China has such a large number of population, labor is so cheap.

Fortunately I am just a intern now, I still have one year's college to improve myself. It is very hard to find a well-paid job now in China, even for the postgraduates. The pressure of life is heavey enough to make people asphyxial, the price of daily products, houses, fees etc is higher even if the administration has implemented some policies. I am already 21 years old now, as the tradition, people in China usually get married before 30, and the couple should have house and car in modern time, that make people of reputation, the money should be afforded by men most! Stupid tradition and annoying capital society, but no one can hold the trend. I don't know who will marry me if I had no money to afford the houses ,car and others the wedding requests. Love is so weak when coming across money.

People at this age have to be concerned about the future life, and we will find so many uncertainties, that must make us sick and down! Woo, I auctually need a nice sleep now! A very deep sweat sleep without any anxiety and concern! Maybe there is a brand new clear sky when I wake up.:)
